Drone Launch Pad on Wheels: Build Your Field Base Anywhere

Oct 02, 2026
Tailbreaker seating system on a pickup truck at an outdoor drone field with an open tailgate and flight gear

You drive to the field, park your truck, and the whole operation moves to the back. The controller, tablet, batteries, spare props, hard case, landing pad, and cooler all live on the tailgate or in the bed.

Then the long day begins.

You stand over the gear for hours. You hunch over a screen. You look up at the aircraft, back down at the map, then up again. A folding chair may sink into the grass, block the truck bed, or leave you facing the wrong direction.

Tailbreaker changes the field setup. Your truck or SUV becomes the drone launch pad on wheels. The open tailgate holds the aircraft and gear. The Tailbreaker seating system becomes your field base camp: the place to sit, monitor, plan, and change batteries.

1 System. Infinite Adventures.

The truck is the launch pad. Tailbreaker is the field base.

The aircraft does not launch from the Tailbreaker seating system.

The vehicle and open tailgate are where you stage the drone, batteries, controller, landing pad, and other equipment. Tailbreaker gives the pilot and visual observer a stable place to work beside that setup.

The tailgate stays fully open and usable while the system is mounted. Use it as:

  • A launch and landing preparation area
  • A battery-swap bench
  • A pre-flight checklist station
  • A laptop and mapping desk
  • A gear table for props, tools, and cases
  • A place to organize water, snacks, and a cooler

Nothing blocks the truck bed. Your equipment stays within arm’s reach while you remain in a clear line of sight to the aircraft.

A better setup for an RC flying field

A good portable seating system should do more than give you somewhere to sit. It should help the whole field work better.

Tailbreaker is useful for:

  • An RC flying field
  • An RC airplane field
  • An RC plane field
  • Drone piloting
  • Drone mapping
  • Inspection work
  • Real-estate aerial photography
  • Agriculture surveys
  • Roofing and solar inspections
  • Search-and-rescue practice

The two independent seating positions let the pilot and a second person choose their own direction. One person can face the sky while the other faces a tablet, map, or monitor.

That layout also fits flight teams that use a co-located visual observer. The observer can watch the aircraft and surrounding airspace while staying next to the pilot and speaking directly with them.

Four ways to set up your drone field base

The Tailbreaker system has two independent swing arms. Each arm moves 180 degrees, has two height settings, and works separately from the other. Each light gray molded polymer seating position swivels 360 degrees on its own axis.

That gives you several useful configurations.

1. Swing back toward the sky

Swing the seating positions all the way back to face the flight area.

This is the best setup for keeping a clear line of sight to the aircraft. You can follow the drone from a seated position instead of standing and craning your neck for an entire flight.

The raised position also keeps you up off the grass, dirt, mud, stickers, and fire ants. Your truck stays behind you, with batteries, tools, and cases close by.

2. Swing to the side for pilot and observer work

Move the two independent arms to the side for face-to-face conversation.

This works well when the pilot and visual observer need to talk about:

  • Wind direction
  • Flight paths
  • Battery levels
  • Obstacles
  • Mapping routes
  • The next aircraft or flight plan

The two positions do not have to point in the same direction. One person can watch the sky while the other checks a screen or talks with a client.

3. Swing inward toward the tailgate

Turn the seating positions toward the open tailgate when it is time to work.

This is the right setup for:

  • Swapping flight batteries
  • Changing propellers
  • Checking landing gear
  • Reviewing a pre-flight checklist
  • Setting up a controller
  • Checking mapping software
  • Writing flight notes
  • Reviewing photos or inspection data

The truck becomes a truck mobile office without giving up the cargo area. A laptop can sit on the open tailgate while both positions turn toward the screen.

For commercial pilots, this creates a compact mobile work site between flights. You can park beside a farm, roof, construction area, or property line and work from a stable field base instead of kneeling in a pasture or standing beside a folding table.

“I run a plumbing company, and time on site is money. The Tailbreaker turned our work trucks into mobile workstations.”
Rick S., Tailbreaker customer

4. Use Table Mode

One seating position can fold flat with its cup holders accessible. The other position can stay upright.

Use Table Mode for a phone, drink, flight log, or small field item. It is helpful when one person is working on the tailgate while the other remains ready to monitor the field.

Table Mode is built into the seating system. It is not a separate table accessory, and it does not change the open tailgate into a launch area.

Stable support on uneven ground

Folding chairs depend on four legs staying balanced. That can be a problem on soft grass, gravel, dirt, pasture, or a mowed club field.

Tailbreaker uses the vehicle’s steel frame for support through the hitch receiver. Each independent seating position supports up to 275 pounds.

That means no chair legs sinking into the ground and no cooler lid shifting under you while an aircraft is in the air. The heavy-duty black square-steel frame helps create a stable setup close to the flight line.

The truck hitch seating system stays elevated above the ground and keeps your base camp connected to the vehicle. Always park safely, check the hitch connection, and use each position within its rated capacity.

Precise product design and fast setup

The Tailbreaker® 360°/180° Hitch-Mounted Dual Seating System starts with one main black square-steel yoke. The yoke slips into your standard 2-inch hitch receiver.

The two black square-steel swing arms are permanently attached to that short yoke bar right next to the receiver. They are not separate loose arms. Each one rotates independently through 180 degrees and offers two height settings.

Two identical light gray molded polymer seating positions pop onto the swing arms. Each one swivels 360 degrees on its own axis.

This is two completely independent seating positions, not a bench and not one connected unit.

Setup takes under 30 seconds with the quick-locking knob. No additional tools are needed.

When the flying day ends, the arms fold parallel to the main yoke for compact storage. The system folds clamshell flat and packs into the premium branded carrying bag so it can stay in your truck bed between field days.

Built for hobby pilots and working drone crews

The same field base can support many types of drone work.

Drone mapping

Keep the laptop, tablet, batteries, and maps on the open tailgate. Swing inward to review the next grid or check completed data.

Agriculture surveys

Work beside fields without putting a folding chair into soft soil. The raised seating positions keep the pilot and observer close to the truck and clear of wet ground.

Roof and solar inspections

Use the tailgate as a mobile desk for checklists, customer notes, and equipment. The system gives you a steady place to work between flights.

Real-estate aerials

Park at the property edge, keep the aircraft cases organized in the bed, and use the seating positions as a small client briefing area.

Search-and-rescue practice

A second person can monitor maps or communicate with the pilot while the visual observer keeps watch over the aircraft and surrounding area.

RC airplane field days

Use the same setup for flight-line planning, transmitter checks, battery changes, and long club sessions. For more ideas, read RC Flying Field Setup: Get Off Your Feet and Stay on the Plane.

Flying safely from your field base

A comfortable field setup still needs safe flight habits.

  • Fly only for recreation under the recreational rules, or hold a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate for commercial work.
  • Recreational pilots must pass the free TRUST test and carry proof of completion.
  • Register the aircraft at FAA DroneZone if it weighs 250 grams, or 0.55 pounds, or more. Mark the registration number on the aircraft.
  • Registered drones must broadcast Remote ID unless they are flying inside an FAA-Recognized Identification Area, or FRIA.
  • Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight, or use a co-located visual observer in direct communication with the pilot.
  • Fly at or below 400 feet in Class G airspace.
  • Get authorization through LAANC or DroneZone before flying in controlled airspace.
  • Yield to manned aircraft at all times.
  • Check B4UFLY before flying.
  • Use anti-collision lighting for night operations as required by Part 107 or your community-based organization’s guidelines.
  • Follow rules for flying over people and avoid flying over spectators, the pit area, and parked vehicles.
  • Respect private property, landowners, club rules, and local restrictions.

The Tailbreaker seating system is a place to sit and work at the field. It is never a launch platform. Do not launch, take off, or land from it. Never operate the system while the vehicle is moving.
